What is your first political memory?  Invariably American government and politics is about story telling.  Political campaigns win with strong narratives.  Successful politicians brand themselves like you would market any other popular product.  What political event or popular elected official do you remember from your youth?  What will you remember about today's president and the times you currently live in? 'Member when . . . ?

Growing up in the '60s the news seemed to be always on in our house. Of course there was no cable TV back then. Typically we only received three (3) channels. Little else was on.

I can distinctly remember the assassination of M.L. King, Jr. The riots that followed throughout the country gave me nightmares. Stories about Vietnam occurred every day. But the political story that made a lasting impression upon my youth was Watergate. In school we were always taught to admire the President. The scandal that brought down Nixon and "all the president's men" consumed our attention. It was a huge story.

Still is. The country never quite recovered. Trust has forever been redefined with a cynical twist.

Nov. 4, 1980---Moving day for my family and presidential election day for my country. On the way out of town, Mom and Dad actually stopped and voted for President (Reagan v. Carter) at our local elementary school. It had to have been a busy and stressful day for them, but voting was still a priority!

The day when Obama took over the office, the first African American president for the United States. People were watching this all over the world!

The time after the Supreme Court decided on whether Bush or Gore would get the presidency because my parents were unhappy with the outcome!

From kindergarten, when me and Evan Johnson rallied for presidential candidate George W Bush during the 2000 elections. I wanted him because he had nice hair.

When I was in 2nd grade, a momentous moment in American history occurred: the twin towers collapsing to the ground due to a violent terrorist attack. I remember as though I was utterly speechless and frightened-- all of the American citizens who were there or watching the news had the same emotions as me. This event changed our nation as a whole, and ultimately left an eternal scar. I will always remember this memory, it will never fade.

My first political memory was when I was watching the 2000 presidential election and I remember sitting there with my dad and hearing him telling me how close it was. It was really significant looking back because now I can say that I remember where I was when the 2000 election occurred.

I remember the 2000 election - but not much of it. Being only in 1st grade, all I really remember is lots about Al Gore, Florida, and how there are two George Bushes - and I had to say the 'W' with the new president! I also remember getting under the impression that every president's son would become president, since I was told George W. Bush's father (George Bush) was president before.
